Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing is available throughout the McGillycuddy Reeks as well as in the Gap of Dunloe. We can organise a local guide to bring you a long and provide guidance and equipment for your day out.

Carrauntohill

Carrauntoohil is the central peak of the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks range and Ireland’s highest mountain at 1,039 metres. We can organise guides for your group for climbing Carrauntoohil.

The Kerry Way

The Kerry Way is a long-distance trail measuring 214 km in length. It is a circular trail which starts and finished in the town of Killarney. From Killarney it is a 1 day walk to the black valley where our hostel is located. It usually takes nine days for walkers to complete the trail in full.

Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is a world famous tourist spot and known for its beauty. The narrow mountain pass cuts between the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and the Purple Mountain. It is 11km in length and is suited for a great day trip whether walking, cycling or taking a pony .

The Black Valley

The Black Valley in County Kerry, is a remote location in the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks situated south of the Gap of Dunloe and north of Moll’s Gap. The valley is also part of the Kerry Way, a walkers version of the Ring of Kerry beginning and ending in Killarney.

Kate Kearneys Cottage

Kate Kearneys Cottage is located 8 km from the black valley hostel. It is well known for the Irish traditional nights which take place during the summer months. Whether you are looking for a bite to eat or to meet the locals for a drink it is a great place to visit while staying with us.

Cycling

Cycling is becoming more and more popular while visiting our part of Ireland, and we can recommend many routes to take. Whether looking for a leisurely cycle to relax or a more intense work out there are plenty of routes to suit all types.

Fishing

We are close to the Lakes of Killarney which are great for fishing both Salmon and Trout. You can also fish on the Laune or Caragh lake which are both within 20 minutes drive from the hostel. We are even within reach of the Atlantic ocean if you want to do some fishing on a boat or from the cliffs.
